The resume has one goal or purpose, and that is to get an interview.
There are a few things to keep in mind when writing your resume
using resume templates.
When writing a resume, be sure to include specific dates with
your education history and work history. Make sure the resume
is printed not hand written and looks professional. It will speak
without your presence, so format and presentation mean everything.
Use a quality paper, not just the usual white paper in photocopiers
or printers. You can buy parchment or other type of paper at a
stationary store. Make sure the colour of the paper is not too
outlandish, stick with the soft shades.
Before writing the resume, find out about the job you are going
to apply for, then write the resume around this, including only
the things you feel might be relevant for the position. For example,
when I applied for a computer job, I had a completely different
resume to when I applied for a cleaning job.
Include at the bottom of your resume a reference section. And
if you prefer, put available on request. This ensures that you
know ahead of time when they are going to ring your references.
This is an indication they liked your resume.
Some mistakes to avoid:
- Errors in spelling and punctuation.
This is the for the most part the most widespread (and deadly)
mistake!!! and your spell-checker is not enough.
You ought to read through the resume at least once for accuracy
and clarity (numbers, dates, city names, etc.), at least once
for missing or extra words, and once again for spelling mistakes.
Then, show your resume to a few friends and invite them to read
it out aloud. Make sure you note where they pause; it may point
to something you’ve written that’s puzzling or erroneous.
After you get their criticism, amend the resume so that it’s
100% error-free.
- Emphasis responsibilities instead of results.
It’s far more significant to expend the majority of your
time talking about what you accomplished and how you made yourself
priceless to past employers.
Emphasize results and achievements. The more exact, the better.
- Too many big words.
Don’t use big flashy words that need an explanation or
dictionary to understand. Get to the point of what you are trying
to say. Being too wordy can be a big put off for the person
reading the resume and they may just end up throwing it into
the bin.
Simplify! Write as if you were talking to a class of sixth grade
students. That’s the reading level all reporters are taught
to appeal to in their writing. If it works for America’s
newspapers, it should work for you.
Remember your resume convinces the employer that you have what
it takes to be triumphant in the new position or career.
It inspires the prospective employer to pick up the phone and
ask you to come in for an interview.
