Why use both Google Analytics and Your
Web Logs? Because often a page may load, but the
visitor may click out before Google can count a visit, as
Google requires a little Javascript code just before the closing
body tag. Because of this fact, Google cannot count visitors
that don't stay long enough for the Javascript code to load.
A visitor may have to stay at least 5 seconds or more depending
on the size of your page in order for the Javascript to load.
Despite this, Google will show you where the traffic is coming
from, using the Google map in Google Analytics. It will also
give you some interesting information about the visitors it
does log. |

The exact amount of traffic arriving at your site
will be shown in your hosting logs. However the logs are not
so good at determining the origin of the traffic as Google
is. This is because IP addresses do not translate directly
into geographic locations by nature of the implementation.
A more complex model encompassing a variety of techniques
and assumptions is therefore required to accurately geotarget
traffic. Insofar as it is impossible to determine the exact
physical location of any user based solely on his/her IP address,
the goal is to determine the most likely location of the user.
So we encourage you to use both to get an accurate picture
of the traffic arriving at your site. Use your web hosting
logs to see the number of visitors. Then use Google Analytics
to view more in depth information about the visitors that
it does log. |
Sometimes Google may only log half to a third of the actual
traffic sent, whereas your hosting logs will show the full amount.
This will be the case even if you compare your own traffic coming
through search engines, as some visitors will click away from
the site before the Google code loads to log a visit.
If you have any discrepencies with the number of visitors received,
we require that the hosting log stats be sent in order to verify
your claim. If there is any discrepency with the country of origin,
we prefer you send us a copy of Google's Analytic report as this
is more accurate at logging country sources.
